November 17, 2023 – January 11, 2024 | Samantha Haan | An Echo of an Echo

Please join us on 3rd Friday, November 17, as Kiosk Gallery presents An Echo of an Echo, a solo exhibition of paintings by Samantha Haan. In these works, Haan explores linguistic structures through the use of coded systems of an iterative nature. By introducing a system of permutations from a limited set of possible symbols, she invites an element of chance into the process of producing unique compositional variations.

Artist Statement:
Drawing from A Mathematical Theory of Communication (C.E. Shannon) and translated narratives, Haan explores the foundation of languages. By developing her own analog systems, the symbols in Sam’s paintings are arranged by probability. Through this process she finds gaps between meaning and interpretation. The symbols in Haan’s paintings are semasiographic, meaning the signs that don’t directly reflect speech. The sequence of symbols relates to the order of construction in written language.
