We don’t know when we’ll have another traditional exhibition at Kiosk, in which an artist presents their work and the public communes in our space. For the time being, we’re rethinking how we use the space, and hope to put forth a series of interactions that respond to the current circumstances and imagine possibilities for the future. The call below is open to anyone who wants to get the conversation started.
Beyond 2020 Vision – Open Call
In 2020, the ever-present injustices of our world are being revealed in powerful and compelling ways. How can you create lasting change? How has your imagination been activated to new possibilities? What do you want to remember about this moment in history?
What does the view look like from your window?
Kiosk is seeking submissions of artist-made postcards, mail art, and writings for a rolling open call (there is currently no deadline). You may start sending mail art now, and submissions will begin to go up on the walls in August.
We will add all submissions to the gallery walls as they come in (after a brief quarantine). All works will be on view during open hours and by appointment as safety permits – check our website for up to date info on closures and social distancing requirements. Even when the gallery is not open, we keep our lights on a timer between 8AM and 6PM, and as long as the Livestock Exchange Building is open, you can come by and peek in the windows during those hours while observing social distancing guidelines.
Once we have accumulated some work in the space, we plan to have guest curators make selections to cluster on the walls and share online. We’ll be offering stipends for the curatorial work, and we’re hoping to bring in Black artists, BIPOC creators, and people from communities who are under-represented in the art world for these guest curator roles.
After the show, we will be looking for opportunities for this archive to go to an institution that can maintain it long term as a primary source for what artists were thinking at this moment.

DETAILS
Requirements: Work should be two-dimensional (flat), and a maximum of 8.5 x 11 inches (one side). All media will be accepted, but must be able to go through the mail (using an envelope is fine). Multiple works may be submitted. Any kind of imagery or text will be accepted, but we reserve the right to use our discretion so as not to display works that are racist or include hate speech.
Front of work: Put your images, or any writing you want displayed, on the front of the work, as that is the side we’ll display and post.
Back of work: On the back, include your name, and your instagram handle if you’d like to be tagged. If you’re sending postcards and would like to include your return address in case of postage issues, we’ll block out your return address with tape to maintain your privacy.

Submissions will not be returned, but will be archived in our back room after the show, available for viewing upon request, until the archive moves to a more permanent home. Submissions will be scanned, and may be shared on our website or on instagram – if you do not want your work published online, please write “do not publish” on the back of your work.
