On 3rd Friday in January, Kiosk Gallery presents Jewelbox – an exhibition of new work by Pia Bakala. With layers of paper and paint, Bakala utilizes a cumulative process to reflect on the way our perceptions of the past evolve over time – our memories glittering with psychological adornment.
Bakala says,
“I liken each image’s construction to the act of accumulating emotional baggage – the messy process of reconciling past and present notions of self. Paint functions as an agent of change, with the power to not only give representation to subjective feelings but also the ability to omit visual information. In this way, these works portray psychic spaces in flux – constantly evolving to incorporate non-verbal information whilst struggling to retain their objective integrity.”
Bio: Pia Bakala is a visual artist working with painterly expressions of everyday internal conflicts. Much of her work utilizes photography and collage, often framing the composition of a painting with photographic elements. Themes ranging from sentimentality to self-erasure and sexuality are all present in his work, providing a space within which she may confront emotional depths. Pia received her BFA in Painting and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2013 where she cultivated a passion for the history of painting in addition to post-modern ideas of subjectivity.
